Overview
Mighty Nein is a fantastic role-play show by Critical Role, set in a Dungeons & Dragons universe created by Mat Mercer. As viewers, we get to watch the story unfold and take shape through every player’s improvised choices.
For this original fan trailer, we focused on the iconic High Seas Arc (Campaign 2, Episodes 36–47). This chapter is filled with pirate politics, ancient sea gods, dangerous alliances, and underwater temples. The midpoint of the campaign reveals some of the story's most pivotal plot moments, making it one of fans’ favorites. Especially Ours!
The story follows the Mighty Nein as they acquire a ship, attempt to become sailors, encounter the ambitious pirate captain Avantika, and become entangled in a plot surrounding the imprisoned leviathan Uk'otoa.
This project was created as a tribute to Critical Role. It celebrates improvisational storytelling that inspires us to build amazing worlds beyond our imagination.

Challenge
Critical Role: High Seas Arc is a chaotic, heartfelt, playful, dangerous, and unpredictable story that spans multiple episodes and contains an enormous amount of story.
In a short span of time, the Mighty Nein:
Take command of their own ship.
Meet the pirate captain Avantika.
Become involved with the cult of Uk'otoa.
Explore ancient temples hidden across the Lucidian Ocean.
Navigate the pirate haven of Darktow.
Face sea monsters and supernatural threats.
Discover the mysterious Happy Fun Ball.
Witness major revelations about Fjord's past.
Learn the tragic history of Yasha.
Continue developing the relationships that define the Mighty Nein.
The challenge is to translate a long-form tabletop role-play experience into a concise, cinematic format that fans and newcomers can understand quickly.
Solution
Lihtar approached the trailer as a love letter to Critical Role and the Mighty Nein.
Instead of trying to summarize every event, we focused on the arc's feeling: a crew thrown into danger, a sprinkling of humor, and characters stumbling toward heroism as they face the consequences of their own choices. Distilling the trailer down to include the pirate crews, dangerous alliances, Uk’otoa, Avantika, underwater threats, emotional revelations, and the chaos that makes the Mighty Nein unforgettable. These story beats provided a framework that allowed us to balance spectacle with character-driven storytelling.
Our production leaned into dynamic action sequences, cinematic staging, and energetic fantasy-adventure pacing to match the beat of the "Your turn to Roll" theme song created by Jason Charles Miller and Sam Riegel. The Characters were refined from existing designs to remain recognizable while adding our unique touch. The backgrounds were painted to give scenes an old-school high-fantasy feeling. Finally, each shot was designed to honor the performances that inspired it while creating a bold animated interpretation of the high-seas journey. Culminating in a work we could be proud of as fans of the series.
Character Design
Backgrounds
We wanted to add depth to the fantasy aspects of the Critical Role world by using rich, warm colors to contrast with the cool colors of the high-sea’s concept. This way, it's easy to tell the crew is traveling through tropical lands while still dealing with the depths of the seas.
Progress
Rough animation developed the trailer’s timing, acting, action beats, and comedic rhythm.
